There’s enough bacon at breakfast for thirds. Also pancakes and scrambled eggs, grainy compared to her mom’s creamy ones, but good enough.

At the table this morning are cabins 17 and 18, top bunks. Niraj, the person in the world she most needs to talk to, sits beside her. James, across the table, softly drums his hands along the edge. He smiles when she looks over and her face turns hot. She knows it’s red. She’s embarrassed by that, but she smiles back for a second.

It helps that she has work to do.

“I know how to pull off your prank,” she says quietly to Niraj. “The raccoon one, but without raccoons. Can you figure out how to get a meeting together today? The whole gang?”

“Hey,” he says, looking at her closely. “Are you okay? I mean, I feel worried about you. Sneaking out to that shed was great, but … you know.”

“Yeah,” Breanna nods her head. She appreciates him asking her straight up like this. “I’m fine. It was a freaky thing. It’s over.”

“Okay,” he says, but he’s studying her, like he’s making sure it checks out. She hopes he believes her. For now, it feels true. It seems like he sees that, because his face breaks into a huge Niraj smile. “I knew you’d figure out how to make my prank work. For sure I knew.”

Niraj’s enthusiasm feels good. “The schedule is so tight here,” Breanna says. “Do you think we can pull off a daytime planning meeting?”

“That’s tricky,” Niraj says. Breanna can tell that he’s thinking hard. She’s relieved. Her reliable prank brain came up with an idea, but it’s not stepping up for the rest. This camp is bad for her prank brain.

“We don’t have much free time,” Niraj says. “But … But. There’s like half an hour before dinner where things are kind of loose, you know?”

Breanna nods.

“That’s the right time. Scott and Mitchell I have to tell now, before their cohorts take off. I’ll find them.” Already, his eyes scan the room, looking for them. “I’m thinking we meet behind this building tonight at five thirty. It’s private back there, mostly.” Breanna is intrigued that he knows that. “I’ll bring Trevor. Okay?”

He’s figured everything out, that fast, which is exactly what Niraj, concentrating, can do. “Yep,” Breanna says, nodding her head. “Yep to all of it. I’ll tell Pascale. Cynthia, too.” Niraj frowns at Cynthia’s name. “She’s solid, Niraj. Trust me.”

“Okay,” he says. “I trust her if you trust her.”

“I do,” Breanna smiles at the words. She really does trust Cynthia. She counts her as a friend and a valuable Wildebeest teammate and in her gut—she’s pretty sure—as a Gonzo Gazelle, someday soon.

Niraj is on his feet and weaving through the maze of tables and chairs and loud kids and clattering dishes to where Mitchell sits, just in front of the window, the big blue lake glittering behind him. Breanna lets herself stare at it, breathing in the shimmer where the angled rays of morning sun catch the water and shine it bright.
